UC Santa Cruz is home to a variety of student development programs, many of which also have goals of aiding society at large through training students to help the community and through fostering research.


Center for Biomolecular Science & Engineering (CBSE) Research Mentoring Institute (RMI)

This program offers diversity-oriented fellowships to graduate students and awards to undergraduates interested in pursuing research projects in areas relevant to the human genome, including the ethical, legal, and social implications of genome research. Students participating in RMI receive mentoring from faculty advisors, other students, and the program coordinator. The program exposes students to the nature and rigors of a research environment, thus enhancing preparation for and success in graduate school and beyond. stem.ucsc.edu/CBSE

 

EOP Bridge Program
[formerly SummerBridge Program]

EOP (Educational Opportunity Program) Bridge is an academic preparation and support program designed to assist a select group of EOP freshmen make a smooth transition from high school to the university. The Bridge program offers preparation in academic reading, writing, and mathematics skills, introduces students to university resources and academic success strategies, and builds a strong and supportive community among the Bridge students. The program includes a Summer Preparation program, a three-day Early Move-in Orientation in September, and courses, academic advising, learning support, and community building activities during the fall quarter with continued follow-up activities during winter and spring quarters.

 

Global Information Internship Program (GIIP)

The Global Information Internship Program is an innovative undergraduate initiative sponsored by the Center for Global, International and Regional Studies at UC Santa Cruz. GIIP’s objective is to raise the capacity of community, civil society, and non-governmental organizations to maximize the use of Internet-based information and communications technologies. giip.ucsc.edu

 

Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity (IMSD)

The Initiative for Maximizing Student Diversity Program, IMSD, (formerly known as MBRS) provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to receive an in-depth experience in the academic and experimental aspects of biological research. Funded through the National Institute of Health, the undergraduate IMSD program consists of a summer research institute during the summer and laboratory research projects during the academic year. MentorNet

MentorNet's One-on-One Mentoring Programs focus on matching women and underrepresented minorities with female or male professionals from all sectors as mentors for one-on-one, e-mail-based mentoring (e-mentoring) relationships. MentorNet proteges are in the engineering and science fields and are community college, undergraduate and graduate students, postdocs, and untenured faculty. UC Santa Cruz partners with MentorNet to provide this service to UCSC students. stem.ucsc.edu/MentorNet

Minority Access to Research Careers

The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program offers research training to participating students to help prepare them to compete successfully for entry into graduate programs leading to the Ph.D. in the biological sciences or into a combined M.D./Ph.D. program. Funded through the National Institute of General Medical Sciences, the MARC program's goals are to increase the numbers and capabilities of minority scientists and to prepare students for careers in biomedical research and/or teaching. marcmbrs.ucsc.edu/marc

 

Minority Biomedical Research Training Program (MIRT)

Since 1994, the UCSC-MIRT (Minority Biomedical Research Training Program at University of California, Santa Cruz), sponsored by the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, has provided training to underrepresented minority students and women who aspire to professional research careers in the biomedical sciences. stem.ucsc.edu/MIRT

The Page and Eloise Smith Scholastic Society (PESSS)

PESSS is an organization affiliated with the UC Santa Cruz Alumni Association that serves UC Santa Cruz students; students in community colleges, especially those seeking to transfer to UC Santa Cruz; and precollege students. PESSS provides mentorship, financial support, and university-related experiences for students who are orphans or wards of the court. www.smithsociety.ucsc.edu

 

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Information Technology (SURF-IT)

Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship in Information Technology (SURF-IT) offers opportunities for both UCSC students and non-UCSC students. SURF-IT will provide an intensive and personalized summer program with a focus on women, minority, and disadvantaged undergraduates. SURF-IT includes a research experience supervised by a UCSC faculty member in computer engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or bioinformatics. stem.ucsc.edu/SURF-IT
