Departmental and Division Honors and Intensive Programs

One option for well-prepared students is to apply for an intensive program, honors courses, or scholarships or other honors that are offered by UC Santa Cruz departments or divisions.

Academic Excellence Honors Program (ACE)

The Academic Excellence Program (ACE) is supported by the Division of Physical and Biological Sciences. The ACE Program provides peer mentorship and discussion sections in general biology, entry-level mathematics, calculus, and both general and organic chemistry. It was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring. ace.ucsc.edu

Anthropology Intensive Tracks

The Anthropology Department offers three intensive tracks in archaeology, physical anthropology, and cultural anthropology that provide students the option of a more enriched program of study. anthro.ucsc.edu

Art Department

The William Hyde and Susan Benteen Irwin Scholarship Fund, established in 1986, is an annual merit scholarship of up to $2,500 offered in the winter quarter to further the art education of select UC Santa Cruz art students. In addition, Irwin Grants of up to $1,000 are offered in the fall and spring. The Art Department also offers the Frances Florence Scholarship. admissions.ucsc.edu/discover/majors/art.cfm

Computer Science Department

The Computer Science Department offers Computer Science 195 and 195E, Senior Thesis Research, in which undergraduates receive faculty supervision in conducting research. These courses are offered only by permission of the instructor, with the typical student being an honors student. admissions.ucsc.edu/discover/majors/ComputerScience.cfm

Economics Department

The Economics Department is in the planning stage for adding honors options to two of its required core courses, which will be mathematics-intensive versions of required intermediate microeconomics and intermediate macroeconomics. The department is also planning to add an honors seminar to their upper-division electives.

Economics also offers a B.A./M.S. degree in applied economics and finance. Undergraduate economics majors can enter the M.S. program in their fourth year, in which some of their M.S. courses satisfy their undergraduate requirements. Upon completion of the B.A. degree at the end of the fourth year, students return for a fifth year of study, when they take more field-oriented courses and then complete the M.S. degree. econ.ucsc.edu

Engineering Honor Society

The UC Santa Cruz Engineering Honor Society, which focuses on academics and service, formed in June 2004. Juniors and seniors are invited to join the society based on their academic excellence. One of the society’s projects is the popular UCSC Engineering Day, an outreach program for high school students to inspire them to study engineering and science. honors.soe.ucsc.edu

Honors in the Major

At graduation, the department sponsoring the major program may confer Honors or Highest Honors in the major. This notation appears on the student's transcript as well as on the diploma.

Latin American and Latino Studies

A Student-Directed Undergraduate Seminar option is available to unusually qualified students only. It requires three quarters of preparation directed by a faculty adviser and approval by the Academic Senate Committee on Educational Policy. This option can be taken only by petition and must be approved by the faculty adviser. admissions.ucsc.edu/discover/majors/LALS.cfm

Legal Studies

Students interested in working on original research under the supervision of a faculty member may write a senior thesis. Before beginning work on the thesis, students are required to obtain the approval of a faculty sponsor. admissions.ucsc.edu/discover/majors/LegalStudies.cfm

Literature

Intensive Literature Major – Two additional upper-division courses are required, in addition to the ten required for the standard major.

Creative Writing Concentration – Admission to this concentration is selective. To apply for admission to the creative writing concentration, students should submit a completed application form (available at the Literature Department Office) and a thoughtful selection from their work (8-10 pages of poetry or 10-20 pages of fiction, comprising at least two stories). Students accepted into the concentration must complete three advanced writing workshops and a senior project (e.g., a group of stories, a significant portion of a novel, a collection of poems).

Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP)

The Multicultural Engineering Program (MEP), also known as the MESA Engineering Program, is the university level component of the statewide Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)—a program of the University of California Office of the President. At UC Santa Cruz, MEP is supported by the Baskin School of Engineering with its goal to promote diversity and facilitate the retention and graduation of a diverse population of students, especially groups that remain the most underrepresented in engineering studies. The program received the 2004 UC Santa Cruz “Excellence Through Diversity Award,” which is presented to programs or individuals for efforts that promote a diverse and inclusive environment. stem.ucsc.edu/MEP

Psychology Intensive Major

The intensive major is an option that any psychology major may choose to undertake. Students petition for the major no later than the beginning of the junior year. The intensive major would be advantageous for students intending to go on to graduate programs in any area of psychology. psych.ucsc.edu/undergraduate/intens_major_req.php
