The Family Educational Rights and Privacy
Act of 1974 (FERPA) was established in order to protect the
privacy of students with respect to education records; to
establish students' rights to inspect and review their education
records; and to provide students with an opportunity to have
inaccurate or misleading information in their education records
corrected.
Information that can be given in response to an inquiry about
a student follows:
• Student’s name, address, campus e-mail address,
and local phone number
• College
• Major
• Class level (e.g., frosh, senior)
• Dates of attendance
• Number of credits enrolled in the current term
• Degrees and honors received
• Name, weight, and height of participants on intercollegiate
athletic teams
All other information contained in a student record is considered
confidential and may not be released without the written consent
of the student, including: summer addresses; grades; GPA;
number of credits completed; social security/student number;
anticipated graduation; and/or date of birth.
Students may request that information that can be made available
to the public not be released by filing a Request for Non-Release
of Public Information at the Office of the Registrar. In the
case that a Request for Non-Release of Public Information
has been filed, no information may be released about an individual,
including whether she or he is or has been enrolled at UC
Santa Cruz.
