This is a two-credit class and also includes a four-hour service placement in the community. Getting involved with the community is a great way to learn more about yourself and the Santa Cruz area. HIV Prevention Program staff and volunteers help provide the
UC Santa Cruz community with information, resources, and support
to lower the risk of contracting HIV and other Sexually Transmitted
Infections (STIs). Volunteer opportunities include participation
in the following programs: Condom Co-op, Free and Anonymous
HIV Testing, Presentations, Outreach, and Special Events.

The Institute for Leadership Development & Social Responsibility
strives to engage UC Santa Cruz students in university-wide
learning opportunities centered on the development of leadership
and character building skills. This comprehensive approach
to developing the student as citizen is designed to integrate
the university’s academic mission with issues of: critical
thinking, decision-making, civic responsibility, ethics, socialization,
integrity, spirituality, and community. Through this program,
students can become involved in civic engagement, community
service, and leadership programs.

The Oakes Serves Program staff assists in recruiting and placing
students in the identified service-learning areas by providing
support services to enhance student learning and service,
i.e., orientation, supervision, recognition, evaluation, assessment,
and monitoring of service-learning experiences. Students receive
3 credits each quarter for working a minimum of 8 hours a
week, keeping a journal of their service, and meeting with
the coordinators of the program.

A College Ten Service Learning Organization whose goal is to build community and learn about social justice in Santa Cruz County. This group does many outreach and volunteer projects, such as visiting soup kitchens, restoring community structures, and organizing on-campus blood drives.
Rape
Prevention Education

Rape Prevention Education works to educate the community about
the realities, the causes and the prevention of rape; to provide
crisis counseling for rape survivors and their loved ones;
and to make rape an issue of public concern and discussion.
Gillian Greensite (director), a team of dedicated peer educators,
and many volunteers comprise Rape Prevention Education.

The Seymour Discovery Center is a research and education facility
of the University of California, Santa Cruz. The lab serves
as a base for field research in Monterey Bay and the ocean
beyond. Volunteers contribute daily in a variety of ways,
including: cleaning tanks, leading tours, staffing the bookstore,
and assisting with school programs.
