DESCRIPTION
A working observatory since the 1880s, Lick is
located on Mt. Hamilton 19 miles east of San Jose
and about 60 miles from UC Santa Cruz. The visitors'
center and visitors' gallery (housing the 120-inch
Shane Telescope) are open to the public. In 1988,
the university established the University of California
Observatories (UCO), to manage Lick Observatory
and UC's component of the Keck Observatory in
Hawaii. UCO's headquarters are on the Santa Cruz
campus in Kerr Hall.
