Associate Director of Admissions James Onwuachi

We are delighted to announce our staffing changes for this fall, which include new faces, promotions, and a very welcome returning member of the UC Santa Cruz Admissions family.

James Onwuachi, Associate Director of Admissions

Our new Associate Director of Admissions, James Onwuachi, is from Houston, Texas. He earned his bachelor's degree at Grinnell College and his master's at Vanderbilt University. His professional career includes various positions at Vanderbilt: Financial Aid Counselor, Transfer Admissions Coordinator, Coordinator of Multicultural Outreach, and Associate Director of Admissions. At Grinnell College, James held two positions, Associate Dean of Admissions and Coordinator of Multicultural Admissions, and James held similar positions at Oberlin College. In addition to his extensive admissions experience, James has also been a high school teacher/counselor and an associate producer at a Houston television station.

A fun fact about James, just in case his last name sounds familiar to you:

"An interesting note, my cousin Kwame Onwuachi, was most recently a finalist on the Bravo TV reality series, 'Top Chef' just months ago," said James. "I mention that because my last name is a highly unusual last name. There are only two small families in the entire world with my last name."

James can be reached at jonwuach@ucsc.edu or 831.459.3608.

Christina Sandoval-Paquette, Admissions Assistant Director, Transfer Preparation Program/Articulation Officer

Christina replaces our highly valued Assistant Director/Articulation Officer Barbara Love, who retired after 38 years of working for UC Santa Cruz (see eSlug Summer 2016). Christina first came to UC Santa Cruz as a transfer student from Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California, and worked as one of our Transfer Peer Mentors for the Transfer Preparation Program. After graduation, she was hired by the Jacobs School of Engineering at UC San Diego, where she spent over six years on that staff in two different positions. Her responsibilities included advising students, conducting outreach, and interfacing with faculty on curricular and policy issues. She also worked closely with the Admissions Office at UCSD, serving as liaison for her department and college.

In March of 2015, Christina joined UC Santa Cruz Admissions as a Transfer Preparation Program Outreach Representative, serving as our primary outreach liaison for three area community colleges, supporting other community colleges in our region, helping prospective transfer students from across the state, and assisting Barbara Love with articulation projects.

Christina can be reached at cgsandov@ucsc.edu or 831.459.4191.
