Academic Program Updates for Fall 2016

eSlug Newsletter Summer 2016 History of Consciousness

Undergraduate academic program updates for UC Santa Cruz in fall 2016 include new minors in history of consciousness and music, the suspension of the sociology major, updating the concentrations in the literature major, and several new contiguous programs combining undergraduate and graduate degrees.

A highly interdisciplinary program, history of consciousness has long been one of UC Santa Cruz's signature Ph.D. programs, and now undergraduates will be able to experience "his con" too by minoring in it. History of consciousness is centered in the humanities but also has ties to the social sciences and the arts. The program is concerned with forms of expression and social action as they are manifested in specific historical, cultural, and political contexts. History of consciousness students have the advantages of maximum flexibility and the opportunity to explore their original, creative thinking.

The music minor is a general minor, which will be added to the other two minors offered by the Music Department, electronic music and jazz. Although the general sociology minor will be suspended for new students starting fall 2016, the Sociology Department will still be offering its innovative minor in global information and social enterprise studies (GISES).

In order to update their offerings, the Literature Department has discontinued the concentrations in English-language literatures, modern literary studies, pre- and early modern studies, and world literature and cultural studies.

Literature majors will still have the option of pursuing the general literature concentration, the language literature concentration (with choices among Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish literature), and the creative writing concentration (competitive admission by application).

In addition, well prepared students who wish to accelerate their undergraduate/graduate programs can take advantage of new continguous bachelor's/master's programs starting in  fall 2016:

  • B.S./M.S. in computer science

  • B.A. or B.S./M.S. program in scientific computing and applied mathematics (undergraduate majors in the mathematics B.A., computer science B.S., and robotics engineering B.S. may apply to the program)

  • B.S./M.S. program in microbiology and environmental toxicology (undergraduate majors in the biological sciences and chemistry may apply to the program)
