Kathleen Tuite
This senior computer science major from Redwood City, California, has enjoyed a successful experience at UC Santa Cruz. A Regents Scholar and winner of a Plantronics Scholarship, Kathleen is also a member of the Backpacking Club. Kathleen says: “Professors here are extremely accessible. Not only are they dedicated to students’ progress in class, but they also strive to inspire us, encourage us to think creatively, and introduce us to their own work.” After graduation, she plans to continue studying computer science in graduate school.

Ali Shakouri
Professor, Electrical Engineering

Professor Shakouri contributed to a project that used nanostructured semiconductor material to create new microrefrigerator devices for overheated computer chips. He is the head of a team of researchers from UC Berkeley, MIT, Harvard, and three other universities who were recently awarded a $6 million grant to apply that technology to creating more efficient direct thermal to electric energy conversion systems.
