This articulate, engaged junior finds inspiration in the History Department at UCSC. "Especially in my concentration, the Americas and Africa, the professors are amazing," she says. "They challenge you to really think and put out the best product you can. They say to you, 'Don't just show me that you can get a good grade, but show me what you are thinking, what you are learning.'" Allysa graduated from San Diego High School in San Diego, California.

Sandra Faber

Professor Faber is well known for having helped discover the Great Attractor, a massive supercluster of galaxies. She also designed the Deep Extragalactic Imaging Multi-Object Spectrograph (DEIMOS), which can read high-quality spectra from over 100 galaxies at once. In 2009, Professor Faber received the Bower Award and Prize for Achievement in Science from the Franklin Institute in Philadelphia, which includes a gold medal and a cash prize of $250,000.
